The Madrid System (officially the Madrid System for the International Registration of Marks) is a mechanism for obtaining trademark protection around the world that is more effective than seeking protection separately in individual countries.
The Madrid System is based on the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks of 1891, which is a multi-national treaty, as well as the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement (1989).
The advantage of the Madrid System is that an applicant can file one application in one country with one set of fees through a single administrative process to protect his/her mark in the territories of up to 98 members. Israel joined the Madrid Protocol in 2010.
